Designing Your Living Room With A Futon

Posted on Thu, Apr 25, 2013

Redecorating or updating your living room? Your futon can fit right in. You'll want one that is elegant and fashionable. Comfortable enough for everyday sitting and just in case you need to use as a bed, you want your guests to feel welcome. Most futons in living rooms are used as a couch. HGTV have decorators that suggest mixing a futon with a pair of occasional chairs or a lounger. Add a table or something like a steamer trunk for a coffee table. Use your imagination for an eclectic look. No need to be like everyone else. Be yourself in decorating. On line you can find all kinds of DIY ideas to help.

A large wicker ottoman is the coffee table.  Using a futon in this space gives you the ability to add color on the cover with throw pillows adding warmth and comfort to lean against. The bentwood rocker mixes well with this setting.

A casual or informal living room makes the statement: Relax and enjoy. Keep the furnishings warm and comfortable. Futons are perfect for this type of setting. Casual and informal is found more often in today's homes. Formal rooms are not as popular because they are not as usefull.

A contemporary living room works well using a futon too. Arts and crafts styles, contemporary frames and mission styles all can be used with contemporary fabrics and colors working to give the look and feel you want. contemporary wide arm frameFutons can be used with tables and chairs that add function to the room.

Want a more traditional or formal look? Futons can be dressed up with more formal fabrics and coordinated with traditional furniture peices.  HGTV has excellent videos on how to mix furniture to create the living room of your dreams. Many actually show futons with other sofas, wing back chairs, or leather furnishings in the same room.

Today's decorating allows you to have your own look. Don't go to a store and just select the set that is sitting there. Mix and match. Create a conversational pit. Add odd pieces that are unique and different. Family heirlooms or antiques work well with new selections. I always suggest using your own imagination to create the look and feel you want to convey.Everything goes these days. loft setting using a futon and bean bag
