Daybeds double as a small loveseat or full time twin bed. They take a regular bed mattress and can sometimes accommodate a trundle bed underneath or additional sleep space. Drawers also can go under a daybed for extra storage. A captains day bed where a trundle bed and drawers go underneath is another type of daybed. The total bed height is higher to make room for both. Daybeds make an excellent place to lounge or take a nap during the day but do not have the comfort level as a regular sofa or futon to use for everyday seating. Futons are available in more sizes than either a day bed or trundle. And futons give excellent seating and sleeping space.
Daybeds come in a varitey of stylish options. You can create a cozy corner in any room. Choose metal, either simple contemporary or an ornate option. Most can accommodate a rollout trundle but only a few have drawer options. Wood daybeds usually have more options in undeneath storage. They can be more expensvive but are more durable. Many styles and finish options are out there. You can easily find one to match your room.
Daybeds take regular linens but you will need a special comforter and skirt for it to fit a daybed properly. Large back pillows are needed it you intend to use as a loveseat during the day. Some daybeds are backless and they are easier to make up with regular bedding. The ones without backs are usually more casual looking.
Futons give a different option for the same space where you might use a daybed. They offer the comfort and style of a regular sofa and a full or queen size bed for sleeping. Again you have many different options in look and feel for comfort. A futon can be a quality and expensive looking alternative to a daybed or traditional sleep sofa. You are not limited by style or fabric choices these days. Due to new technology you can get a futon comfortable and durable enough for every night sleeping. Innerspring mattresses as well as memory foam and other specialty mattresses are now made to fit a futon. (Don't think cheap and uncomfortable).
